MEDIA EDUCATION:
MEDIA- the dominant wildforce of the times

The impact of media in today’s world can hardly be exaggerated. The advent of the information society is a real cultural revolution, making MEDIA the first Aeropagus of the modern (and post-modern age) where facts, ideas and values are constantly being exchanged. Through media, people come into contact with other people and events, form their opinions about the world they live in and indeed – form their understanding of the meaning of life.

For many, the experience of living is to a great extent, an experience of media.

(Pope John Paul II Message on the 34th World Communications Day 2000)

Media must keep well in mind and observe its altruistic dimension. This means, media is for service to others
not for self-service, neither personal interest for temporal gains in the service.

Media must provide the right information to people for their consequent correct formation in truth and their ultimate transformation. This is media at its best!

Media becomes a danger to society, a threat to humanity when it emerges as an idol to be served than a slave to be commanded; when it becomes a master to be obeyed than a tool to be used; when it acts as a weapon to subjugate people than a shield to liberate them from exploitation and oppression.

Media has to be free but responsible; otherwise it becomes a liability to, rather than an asset of society.

Media has to be truthful but also respectful, whereas, truth is neither necessarily brutal nor violent.

Media has to be courageous, but likewise fair, because the principle of equity in no way cancels
the virtue of bravery and strength. back
